Mariam Nabatanzi Babirye (born December 25, 1980) also known as Maama Uganda or Mother Uganda is the most fertile woman in the world.[1][2] She has given birth to a total number of 44 children 38 of whom are alive and 6 deceased. As of April 2023, her eldest children are 28 years and the youngest are 6 years old.[1] She is a single mother, as she was abandoned by her husband in 2015 who feared responsibility of many children.[3][4] She lives in Kasawo village of Mukono district in Central Uganda.

Babirye first gave birth when she was 13 years old, having been forced into marriage at the age of 12, and by the age of 36 she had given birth to a total of 44 children who included: 3 sets of quadruplets, 4 sets of triplets, and 6 sets of twins, for a total of 15 births. The amount of multiple-child births is cause by a rare genetic condition causing hyperovulation as a result of enlarged ovaries. In 2019, at the age of 40, she underwent a medical procedure to prevent any further pregnancies. 16 of her children are girls and 22 are boys.[5][6]

Mariam is currently the world's most fertile woman and the world's fourth most fertile woman in history, the all time record according to the Guinness World Records was by Valentina Vassilyev who gave birth to 69 children between 1725 and 1765, 67 out of 69 children are reported to have survived infancy.[7]

Early Life and background[modifier]

In 1993, Mariam was sold into child marriage at the age of 12 to a violent 40-year-old man, and became a mother in 1994 with a set of twins that was followed up with triplets in 1996. She then gave birth to a set of quadruplets 1 year and 7 months later, but never found the rate at which she was procreating strange because it’s genetic. She was quoted saying that: “My father gave birth to 45 children with different women and these all came in quintuplets, quadruples, twins and triplets.” According to Daily Monitor.[6]

In Uganda, there are some communities that practice early child marriages where a young girl is given off to an older man in exchange for a dowry that most frequently consists of cows, Mariam's marriage was an example of this.[6] At the age of 23, she had given birth to 25 children, but was advised to continue giving birth, as it would help reduce further fertility.[8] Those affected with Mariam's condition are often advised that abstinence from pregnancy can cause health issues.[9]

According to Doctor Charles Kiggundu, a gynecologist at Mulago Hospital, after giving birth to her last set of twinsvia cesarian section, Mariam underwent tubal ligation; her tubes were blocked as a permanent method of contraception, thereby preventing any future births, although she would continue a normal cycle of menstruation.[6] One of the boys from that set of twins died in childbirth, being her most recent child to pass away.[10]

After giving birth to 42 children, her husband run away from her due to his inability to provide for a large amount of children, and later sold off the homestead where Mariam and her children were living, she together with her children would later be hosted by her grandmother.[11] She later realized that her absentee husband had left her with a pregnancy of twins. Mariam's grandmother later died shortly, leaving Mariam in a chaotic scramble for the homestead with other relatives, but they later agreed that Mariam could take full ownership of the homestead via installed payments, and as of April 2023, she is still struggling with some balance before she can assume full ownership of the homestead.[7] Mariam is currently a single mother, caring for her children by herself.

Living situation[modifier]

Mariam, together with her family totalling to approximately 66 people that include: herself, her children, grandchildren and some daughters in law, survive primarily off of donors who, from time-to-time, deliver food, beds, and other necessities. She struggles to provide for her 38 living kids, her daughters-in-law, and her grandkids. To earn extra income for expenses, Mariam works as a part-time tailor, herbalist, and hairdresser.[12][5][13] Mariam is more reliant on donations, as her husband took the family's money when he abandoned her and her children.[14]

The complex that Mariam and her progeny live in is composed of 5 houses constructed from cement blocks, and roofs made from corrugated iron sheets. According to Uganda times, the complex is composed of 17 rooms. 15 are bedrooms and 2 are living and dining rooms which are all empty without any tables or chairs. 9 of the 15 bedrooms are empty without any beds and dirty floor, whereas the 6 rooms have a total of 8 double decker (bunk) beds, 4 of which are not in usable condition. The 4 that seem okay accommodate a total of 24 children where 6 people sleep in one bed the beds have worn-out mattresses.[5][10]

Confidences and Impending Plans[modifier]

According to the Uganda times, Mariam hopes to get Ugx. 5 million (about $1,400(USD) for clearing the remaining balance for their living complex to the relatives and have full ownership.

She also hopes to get new iron sheets and replace the leaking roofs, acquiring 25 new double decker beds and fill the empty rooms, and 66 new mattresses, so that each person lives in their own bed. Mariam further hopes to get some land for cultivating food and rearing animals with family workforce and secure lasting survival for her dependents. She also intends to a restaurant and a bridal salon business in her locality to keep her children busy and more productive.[5]
