Celebrated annually May 16, National EBT Day™ commemorates the first date food stamps were used in the U.S. in 1939 to solve a triple problem of triple problem of farm surpluses, weak grocer sales, and hungry citizens, when unemployment was 17%. The stamps eventually were transitioned to an EBT (electronic benefit transfer) wherein food benefits and funds are received on a card similar to that of to a debit card. National EBT Day™ is founded by Global Activist Greshun De Bouse to raise awareness of the original intent of the food stamp program, which among other things is to defray food costs for those who truly are in need.
